Rollout of COVID-19 Vaccinations

With COVID-19 still lingering, people all over the world are still vulnerable. With the slow rollout and short supply of vaccines the only thing preventing the virus from it’s opportunities to spread are the countless restrictions on our daily lives. As of right now, the three vaccines developed by Pfizer, BioNtech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca are currently being released to the public. Frustration continues to grow throughout the world as people are eager to get the vaccine as soon as possible. Countries worldwide are shutting down vaccination sites due to low supply of vaccines. President Biden has set a goal for the United States to administer 1.5 million doses of the vaccine daily. Despite the vaccines not being approved by the FDA these vaccines have been given federal approval for an emergency rollout of Moderna, Pfizer and BioNtech. Patients are required to receive two doses of the vaccination weeks apart. It is estimated that 70-90% of the population needs to acquire the vaccination in order to reach immunity. The federal government has recently recommended that states only allow citizens 65 and older to get vaccinated. As well as health care workers and long care residents working in care facilities. With this the only way to keep preventing the spread of this virus is to follow all protocols and stay safe.

Discussion questions:

1. Will the rollout of this vaccination be the only way to stop the spread of COVID- 19?

2. Should States start acquiring more age groups to receive the vaccine?

  1. I dont think that vaccine rollout is the only way to stop the spread (key word being "only") because we could either find a way to be immune and then not have to social distance or if we don't find a way to be immune then we would need to cut off all exposure to others in order to stop the spread. Theoretically we could all fully isolate but realistically, it's not possible. I do believe that states should eventually expand the age requirement because it's logical in order to expand the vaccinated population. However, if the current age group is not fully (or close to) vaccinated then it is unwise to open it up to more people. I do wonder how it's possible to draw the line between at-risk and low risk or immunocompetent and immunocompromised as well as essential and non-essential workers. Is it wise to speak up against those lines because freedom to protest or is it unwise to because it will never satisfy everyone?

  2. I don't think that the vaccine rollout is the main way to stop the spread because there are many others ways to stop the spread for example wearing masks and social distancing. I know that professionals say to isolate from other people during this time but realistically, it is just not possible and that is not who we are as a county, state, or even country. Also, when we think about the vaccine rollout, there should be specific groups that go first like high-risk, senior citizens or age 65 and up, and essential workers. I also have been thinking about how it is possible for these professionals to draw the line between essential and non-essential workers and what the requirements are to fit into those groups.

  3. I think that the vaccine rollout is the main way to stop the thread. I feel like there's still a lot of people that don't want to wear masks. They lack regard for others and doesn't wear it because they, personally, are not afraid of the virus. In order to protect most of the people who are willing to follow the guidelines, the vaccine rollout may be the only effective way. There are still a lot of people not vaccinated even in the age group. I believe that once the majority of the age group right now opened has gotten the vaccine, the states should start expanding the age groups.

  4. I think that vaccine rollout is a major way to stop the virus. However, implementing nation wide safety measures such as a mask mandate and social distancing rules is also a great way to stop the spread sense vaccines are not available for all age groups. Although not everyone would like the mask mandate, it is something all governments should implement nation wide because it helps keep everyone safe. I think governments should not allow the individual states to make these decisions because there will be an inconstancy throughout the nation and it will create tensions and confusion among the population.
