Canadian Femicide (Angelina)

Course themes:

How did imperialism and the process of decolonization help shape the history of the 20th and 21st centuries?

Settler colonialism in Canada has targeted its Indigenous population since the beginning of Canadian colonization. The nation has a long history of killing or culturally suppressing its Indigenous population, and this discrimination still has not ended. Indigenous women in Canada have faced inordinately high rates of violence and prejudice for decades, and still do today.

Despite only making up about 2 percent of Canada’s population, Indigenous women account for over 20 percent of reported homicides in Canada. They are over four times as likely to face violence from a partner than non-Indigenous women, and yet a national inquiry launched by the Canadian government reported that the police force and criminal justice system are statistically less likely to bring those who commit violence against Indigenous women to justice. In response to these grim statistics, many have called for a national action plan to be made to investigate the murders or disappearances of many Indigenous women more thoroughly, as an alarming number have been reported missing over the past year.

Discussion questions:

How does the legacy of colonialism and systemic oppression still affect minorities in Western countries today?

Why is understanding intersectionality important?

  1. The legacy of colonialism and systemic oppression still affects minorities because I think colonialism is a huge part of the history in the country and I think that people still don't know how it affects minorities. I also think that their is a lot of racism in the Western countries that connects to colonialism in some way.

  2. The legacy of colonialism and systemic oppression is important too and still affects minorities today. Colonialism is important for everyone to learn about because not many people realize that it still has affects on these groups today.

  3. The legacy of colonialism and systemic oppression still affects minorities because it's difficult to support a country who built itself on the mistreatment and murder of your own ancestors. Just because the legislature and government doesn't discriminate against the minorities anymore doesn't mean the history isn't influencing societal relations and attitudes towards them. Understanding intersectionality is important because we shouldn't have to ignore the differences between ourselves and another in order to treat them equally. We are all different and it's important to recognize the privilege and discrimination that others face so that we are aware of mistreatment.

  4. The legacy of colonialism and systemic oppression continues to affect minorities in Western countries today through passive segregation (not sure if that term works). Tons of minority children grow up thinking that they don't belong in their own nation and yet also feel as though they don't fully fit into their ethnic background, causing them to feel torn.
